About the District

Kamonyi District is located in the Southern Province; it has 12 Sectors, 59 Cells, and 317 Villages. It has a population of 450,849 and a surface area of 655.5 square kilometers. 

Kamonyi District is located in the Southern Province; it has 12 Sectors, 59 Cells, and 317 Villages. It has a population of 450,849 and a surface area of 655.5 square kilometers. It borders five districts: Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyarugenge, Gakenke, and Bugesera.

Kamonyi District headquarters is located in Ryabitana Village, Gihinga Cell, Gacurabwenge Sector, Kamonyi District, Southern Province.

Kamonyi District has various tourist attractions. Among them is 'Ijuru rya Kamonyi' (Heavens of Kamonyi), located in Gacurabwenge Sector, where King Yuhi II Mazimpaka resided. His son, Cyirima Rujugira, later moved to Gaseke Hill, which is currently in Kayenzi Sector. There is also a forest where kings were buried in Muganza, located in Karama Sector.

Kamonyi is a district that produces cassava; land has been consolidated over an area of approximately 2,800 hectares under the 'Imbaturabukungu' (Economic Acceleration) program. Additionally, the development of Kamonyi town is underway, extending from Runda to Gacurabwenge Sector, guided by the Kamonyi City Master Plan.

Kamonyi possesses several tourist sites that should be developed to generate revenue through tourism. Regarding infrastructure, Kamonyi town is being developed, new sector offices have been built, and the District headquarters building has been completed in Gacurabwenge Sector. 

Furthermore, there is a program to settle residents in organized villages (Imidugudu), with roads and plots already demarcated in designated settlement areas.
